Google DeepMind Unveils New AI Model for Predicting Cyclones

Google DeepMind and Google Research have introduced a new website named Weather Lab, which showcases their AI weather models. According to a blog post by Google, the model can forecast cyclone formations, including their path, intensity, size, and shape, up to 15 days in advance.

This experimental AI model is capable of generating 50 different storm scenarios.

The research teams have also published a new paper detailing the core aspects, along with an archive on Weather Lab that contains historical cyclone track data, evaluations, and backtesting.

Google mentioned that during internal testing, they discovered the model’s predictions were as accurate, and often more accurate, than existing physics-based methods. They have also collaborated with the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) to further assess the model’s effectiveness.

The Weather Lab website provides a comparison of the performance between AI models and traditional models.

Additionally, Google has released other AI weather prediction models, such as GenCast, which outperformed one of the physics-based models 97.2 percent of the time, according to a study published in Media.
