IndiaAI Mission and OpenAI sign an MOU to establish OpenAI Academy in India

To establish the OpenAI Academy in India, OpenAI and the government’s IndiaAI Mission have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The cooperation will use the OpenAI Academy and the IndiaAI FutureSkills platform to provide artificial intelligence (AI) training materials as part of the deal. Additionally, it offers training programs for the public sector in Hindi, English, and four regional languages. This is the first time the platform has been made available internationally.

According to Jason Kwon, chief strategy officer at OpenAI, India is one of the top nations actively developing AI technology, with the second-highest number of ChatGPT users.

Chief executive officer (CEO) of the IndiaAI Mission Abhishek Singh stated during the occasion that access to computing power has been a significant obstacle to the advancement of AI development in India. However, he noted that this has been addressed by “providing around 34,000 GPUs (graphics processing units) at affordable rates—less than a dollar per GPU hour—significantly lower than global prices.”

The AI Kosh platform provides extensive datasets in a variety of fields, as well as tools, models, and “a sandbox environment to help innovators experiment and build AI solutions,” Singh said.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister of electronics and information technology as well as information and broadcasting, stated in a virtual message that this collaboration “is a significant step towards advancing our shared goal of democratizing access to knowledge and technology.”

The announcement comes after Kwon toured the world meeting with officials on the deployment and governance of AI.

Data from ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and the OpenAI API platform is now locally stored in India thanks to OpenAI’s introduction of data residency for Indian customers last month.

The next stage of Open AI’s project under the OpenAI Academy banner was launched this week when the company expanded its worldwide AI for Impact Accelerator Program to India.

A fresh round of API credits will be awarded to 11 chosen charity groups in India as part of this expansion, increasing the total value of the technical awards to $150,000. Turn.io, Tech4Dev, and The Agency Fund are among the charitable partners involved in this endeavor.

To support organizations in implementing AI-driven solutions for social impact, the initiative provides them with early access to OpenAI resources, organized cohort-based learning, and practical technical assistance.
