Pune Cyber Police Arrest Suspect in ₹6 Crore ‘Digital Arrest’ Scam Targeting Senior Citizen

The cyber police in Pune have apprehended a person from Raigad district linked to a ‘digital arrest’ scam that defrauded a senior citizen of an astonishing ₹6 crore.

The suspect has been named as Tushar Harishchandra Vajantri, 28, who lives in Kokan, Raigad district. He was taken into custody on Friday in Panvel.

The cyber scam was uncovered between November 9 and November 19, 2024, when a senior citizen filed a complaint stating he had been wrongfully implicated in a fake case via a video call by individuals impersonating law enforcement and government officials. The accused employed intimidation tactics, alleging that the victim was engaged in illegal activities, and persuaded him to transfer ₹6.29 crore to evade legal repercussions and a ‘digital arrest’.

During the investigation, the holder of the accused’s mule account made two fixed deposits (FDs) in the bank amounting to ₹90 lakh and ₹20 lakh. Upon discovering this information, the accused was located through digital surveillance, IP tracking, and banking transaction records. A team of cyber officers successfully captured the suspect in Panvel and transported him to Pune for further inquiry.

A case has been filed under the pertinent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. The cyber police have also frozen multiple bank accounts involved in the crime.
