A new chapter unfolds in the world of design as Jony Ive, the creative soul behind Apple’s most iconic products, aligns with Sam Altman’s OpenAI to shape the next frontier of human technology. Known for bringing elegant simplicity to devices that changed our lives, Ive is now turning his design brilliance toward artificial intelligence.
Jony Ive, who began his journey from the UK after graduating from Newcastle Polytechnic, now known as Northumbria University, joined Apple in 1992. Before this, he ran his own design firm called Tangerine. Apple’s admiration for his early work led him to relocate from London to Cupertino, where his journey with innovation took flight.
Within just a few years, he became the head of Apple’s design team in 1996. Working side by side with Apple’s legendary co-founder Steve Jobs, Ive helped breathe life into an entire universe of breakthrough products like the iPhone, iMac, iPod, Apple Watch and AirPods. His partnership with Jobs wasn’t just professional but deeply personal, rooted in a shared philosophy: create not for profit, but for greatness.
In fact, when Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, it was his words that made Jony stay. “Not just to make money but to make great products,” Jobs had said. At a time when Apple was under Gil Amelio’s leadership, Ive had nearly decided to walk away, frustrated by the company’s focus on margins and mediocrity. That changed with Jobs’ return, and the rest became history.
Jony eventually left Apple in 2019 and started his own creative studio named LoveForm. Now, his studio “IO” has been acquired by OpenAI in a deal reportedly worth 6.5 billion dollars, positioning Jony and his team to take over the design reins for a new generation of AI-first devices. The goal: build elegant tools for generative AI experiences.
Steve Jobs once described Jony as someone who “gets the big picture as well as the most infinitesimal details.” With this move, the designer once responsible for reshaping the future of consumer electronics is now poised to redefine how we interact with intelligence itself.
