TCS Under Lens as Cyber Breach at M&S Sparks £300 Million Storm

In a moment of digital reckoning, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) finds itself in the spotlight as it probes whether its systems served as the vulnerable gateway for a recent cyberattack on the iconic British retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S). The breach, which unfolded during the busy Easter weekend, has shaken the retail giant, causing widespread operational paralysis and leading to a staggering estimated loss of £300 million in profit.

TCS, a trusted technology ally of M&S for over a decade, has launched an internal inquiry to determine its involvement, if any, in the devastating data theft that targeted M&S’s customer systems. According to a report from a common source, the Indian tech powerhouse aims to wrap up its findings before the month’s end.

The aftermath of the breach has been both visible and brutal. M&S was compelled to pull the plug on its online clothing division for over three weeks, a move that sent shockwaves through investors and slashed over £750 million from its market valuation. Online services are still struggling to recover and may remain unstable until July.

Meanwhile, UK authorities are actively investigating the incident. In a recent public address, M&S Chief Executive Stuart Machin shed light on the matter, attributing the intrusion to “human error” and clarifying that the retailer’s own systems were not the root cause. “Staff at a third-party contractor were tricked,” he stated, without disclosing whether a ransom was paid or if TCS’s infrastructure was indeed the hackers’ point of entry.

The ties between TCS and M&S are deep and strategic. Their collaboration began in the early 2010s and solidified in 2018 when M&S entrusted half of its technology roles to TCS, officially recognising it as its principal tech partner. This TCS and M&S partnership evolved further in 2023, aiming to modernise M&S’s entire digital ecosystem.

As both companies navigate this turbulent chapter, the incident serves as a sobering reminder that even the strongest alliances must remain vigilant in an age where data is gold and deception is an art.
