SAIL Teams Up with ABB India to Forge a Digital Future at Rourkela Steel Plant

In a bold stride toward the future of industrial innovation, Steel Authority of India has joined hands with ABB India to digitally transform the Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha. This new partnership aims to blend data with steel, bringing a wave of smart automation and digitization into the heart of one of India’s largest steelmaking hubs.

The two companies have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop advanced digital twin models for the plant’s blast furnaces and basic oxygen furnaces. By sharing operational data, SAIL and ABB will create mathematical and data-driven simulations, offering a mirror of the plant’s systems that will enable real-time analysis and smarter decision-making.

As global steel producers navigate tighter environmental norms, rising operational expenses, and fierce competition, this alliance arrives at a pivotal time. The Rourkela Steel Plant, which produced 4.08 million tons of saleable steel in FY 2024 to 2025, is gearing up to more than double its output to 9 million tons by the year 2030.

With this transformation, SAIL intends to elevate efficiency while walking a greener path. ABB will contribute its rich knowledge in industrial automation and digital intelligence, aiming to reduce waste, streamline production, and ultimately empower sustainable steelmaking.

The digital models will not only assist with process optimization but will also offer predictive insights, helping the plant operate more safely, efficiently, and economically. This step signals a significant leap towards cleaner, smarter manufacturing practices in India’s core industries.

As the steel flows, so does data—bringing with it a promise of progress forged in India’s digital fire.
