SK Telecom (SKT) of South Korea has launched an investigation into a data breach involving SIM-related information, which was executed by an unknown hacker after the company identified and removed malware from its systems.
In a statement, SKT mentioned that it has isolated a suspected hacking device and has not yet found any evidence of personal information misuse.
To safeguard its customers, the company is enhancing its measures to prevent unauthorized SIM card alterations and unusual authentication attempts, while also upgrading its security systems to avert future incidents.
SKT has reported the breach to the Korea Internet and Security Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission, and is working in collaboration with the relevant authorities.
A comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the cause of the breach, its extent, and the specific personal data that may have been compromised.
Customers interested in additional security options, including alerts through the company’s website, can enroll in SKT’s complimentary SIM card protection service.
