Walmart Expands in India with Second GCC in Chennai, Focuses on AI and Cloud Innovation

Walmart is broadening its footprint in India by opening its second Global Capability Center (GCC) in Chennai. The company has secured 465,000 square feet of office space at the International Tech Park Chennai (ITPC) to support teams focused on data engineering, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

This initiative builds on Walmart’s existing GCC in Bengaluru, further establishing India as a vital innovation center for the retail giant.

The Chennai center will house 4,500 employees and is anticipated to boost Walmart’s global technology operations. The lease, which lasts for five years, involves a monthly payment of ₹3.26 crore, with a 4% annual increase in rent.

Analysts indicate that Chennai’s IT corridor, recognized for its skilled workforce and robust infrastructure, is becoming a favored location for GCCs. With this expansion, Walmart is positioning India not only for back-office operations but also as a strategic hub for innovation.

Walmart’s Bengaluru GCC serves as a significant center for its global tech initiatives. The company has leased 1 million square feet of office space from Prestige Group to create this facility. The Bengaluru GCC specializes in artificial intelligence, data engineering, cybersecurity, and cloud computing, supporting Walmart’s retail and e-commerce operations.

This center is essential for optimizing supply chains, enhancing customer experiences, and improving operational efficiency through advanced AI technologies. Walmart has also collaborated with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Madras to foster innovation in AI and machine learning.

India’s GCC market is expected to grow to $99–105 billion, employing over 2.4 million professionals across more than 1,800 centers, reflecting a 17% annual growth in the workforce.
