Starbucks Japan names Hisae Morii as first female CEO

Starbucks Coffee Japan is celebrating leadership diversity with the appointment of Hisae Morii as its new chief executive officer. Starting on April 1, Morii will take over from Takafumi Minaguchi, who is transitioning to an advisory role after six years at the helm.

Morii, who is currently the chief retail and marketing officer, will be the first Japanese woman to lead the company in Japan. Her appointment marks a significant step forward in Japan’s corporate environment, where women are often underrepresented in top decision-making positions.

With over five years of experience at Starbucks Japan, Morii has a deep understanding of the company’s operations. She has been instrumental in enhancing customer engagement and launching mobile ordering and payment services, which have appealed to Japan’s tech-savvy consumers.

Prior to her time at Starbucks, Morii held key leadership positions in the consumer goods sector, including as marketing director at Unilever Japan. Her vast expertise in brand strategy and consumer behavior will be essential as she faces the challenges of steering Starbucks Japan in a competitive and changing market.

“We are excited to see Hisako Morii step up as our new CEO, bringing her expertise to navigate the future of Starbucks Japan,” company representatives said of the leadership transition.
