India will be at the forefront of the AI age, Commerce and Industry says Piyush Goyal

India will lead the AI era thanks to the sensible policies of the Modi administration, which will help inventors and entrepreneurs capitalize on the new digital wave, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

“I am also confident that Mumbai can become India’s tech hub with the incredible investment that is being made in necessary infrastructure, capital, and skill availability,” the Minister further stated in his interaction at the Mumbai Tech Week 2025.

According to him, the commercial capital of India had all the necessary components to become a significant hub for technology.

“Had an excellent interaction at the Mumbai Tech Week 2025, where I had the opportunity to speak at length about India’s huge advantage in adopting AI and contributing to its ethical usage,” the Minister posted on X.

In terms of the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), India is taking the lead. In 2024, there were three billion AI-related app downloads in the nation, significantly more than the 1.5 billion in the US and the 1.3 billion in China.

According to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, this shows that India is the “use case capital of AI”, It indicates that the nation is putting AI into practice on a big scale rather than only discussing it or conducting research on it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed how AI is not only a domestic problem but also a global obligation at the AI Action Summit in Paris last month, which India co-chaired with France. He emphasized how crucial it is to develop an AI that is moral, inclusive, and reliable.

PM Modi stated in his speech that the world was at the beginning of the AI era, where the technology was rapidly reshaping “our polity, economy, security, and society” and creating the code for mankind.

He emphasized that the impact of AI was substantially different from that of earlier technical turning points in human history and urged international cooperation to create norms and governance that respect common values, manage risks, and foster trust. He went on to say that governance included encouraging innovation and using it for the benefit of the world in addition to risk management.

In this sense, he promoted making AI accessible to everyone, particularly those in the Global South. He advocated for the democratization of technology and its applications that focus on people in order to make the Sustainable Development Goals a reality. “It was only natural that the two countries were joining hands to forge an innovation partnership for a smart and responsible future,” the PM said, referencing the success of the India-France sustainability partnership through programs like the International Solar Alliance.

The Prime Minister emphasized India’s accomplishments in creating an open and accessible digital public infrastructure for its 1.4 billion people. Speaking on India’s AI mission, the prime minister mentioned that the country was developing its own large language model for AI because of its variety. In order to guarantee that everyone benefits from AI, he emphasized that India was prepared to share its experience. The next AI Summit would be held in India, the prime minister also declared.
