Hyderabad resident lost ₹17 lakh in a cyber fraud after being tricked by scammers who spoke in Telugu. The victim assumed that fraudsters wouldn’t speak his native language, which made him trust the caller. However, police suspect that the scammers may have used a voice translator app or AI tools to sound convincing.
The 31-year-old victim from Hyderabad received a Facebook friend request in December from a person named Tanya Poosarla. After accepting the request, they started chatting. Soon, the conversation shifted to WhatsApp, where Tanya introduced him to a part-time job opportunity.
She claimed that the job involved merchant brand promotions for well-known platforms like Flipkart and Kucoin. She explained that the victim would need to like, pay, and promote items and, in return, he would receive a refund along with a commission. Tanya asked the victim to create an account on Kucoin and convert rupees to cryptocurrency (USDT) to make payments to a merchant via WhatsApp.
“He began with small amounts and as he received refunds, he gradually increased the payments, ending up paying 17 lakh,” Hyderabad cyber crime official said.
