Promises of permanent employment at Chennai airport and its cargo terminal allegedly cost 12 job seekers a total of ₹23 lakh, leading to the arrest of a 52-year-old former Airports Authority of India (AAI) official.
K Kumari Kala, a resident of Kancheepuram, was arrested by airport police and remanded on October 14. She had previously worked as a senior superintendent at AAI before taking voluntary retirement in 2025. Police said she later operated cargo transport vehicles on a contract basis.
According to investigators, Kala allegedly promised permanent jobs at the airport and cargo offices to educated youths between 2021 and 2025. She reportedly collected between ₹1 lakh and ₹2 lakh from each person, most of whom were children of drivers working with cargo transport vehicles. She allegedly gave the applicants fake job application forms.
The applicants waited for their promised jobs, but none received an offer even after 6 months. When they questioned Kala, she allegedly claimed that their applications had been forwarded to the AAI headquarters in Delhi.
The victims later discovered that Kala had retired from the organisation and had no authority to recruit staff. Following a complaint filed by 1 of the drivers, airport police arrested her.
