Google Play Store brings AI-powered discovery and private app creation to users

Google is expanding the ways users create, discover and access apps and games across its ecosystem. The latest Google Play Store updates introduce AI-powered app comparisons, private Android app creation using natural language prompts, personalised game recommendations and new features for gamers and families.

Announced on Tuesday, the updates allow users to create and run their own Android apps using Google AI Studio without needing a developer account. These “vibe-coded” apps remain private and separate from the public Play Store catalogue. Google plans to let users share them with friends and family. Public publishing will require a professional developer account, along with the usual safety reviews and quality checks. The feature is rolling out in select markets, including the US, for users aged 18 and above.

For app discovery, Ask Play can compare apps, explain key differences and highlight user sentiment. Play in Gemini brings apps, games and developer content from Google Play into Gemini conversations.

Google is also adapting the Play Store for different devices. Cars with Google built-in will get a storefront designed for vehicle displays, while XR devices will support 3D browsing.

Gamers will get Game Finder, which recommends titles based on individual preferences rather than popularity alone. Its Gamer DNA feature analyses playing habits and stated interests, allowing users to refine recommendations by selecting games, genres and mechanics. Game Finder is rolling out in English in the US. Game Playlists will let players create their own collections.

Other gaming updates include Sprints, 48-hour challenges for groups of 2–5 players, and improved Sidekick, an in-game overlay on select devices that now supports recording 30-second Playbacks.

Google is also expanding its PC gaming catalogue with Dave the Diver and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. Upcoming titles include REPLACED, Chosen by Odin and Over the Hill.

For families, Google is adding an option through Family Link that lets parents share a child’s age range, or their own, directly with apps.
