Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced that the Noida International Airport in Jewar will now be known as Narendra Modi International Airport. Located in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, the airport is a greenfield aviation project developed to serve as a second major commercial aviation hub for the National Capital Region (NCR), alongside Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The airport was developed through a public-private partnership involving Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, and the Uttar Pradesh government. The facility combines Swiss operational expertise with Indian architectural influences.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport in March 2026, making it the 2nd international airport in the National Capital Region. Its 1st phase includes a single runway and a passenger terminal designed to handle up to 12 million passengers annually.
The airport’s long-term expansion plan aims to increase its capacity to 70 million passengers per year by 2050 through the development of multiple runways and additional infrastructure. It is connected through the Yamuna Expressway and planned multi-modal transit links.
The project is intended to ease the burden on Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi and reduce air traffic congestion across the wider NCR region.
The 1st phase of the airport, then known as Noida International Airport, was inaugurated on March 28, 2026, while commercial operations began in June 2026. The 2nd phase is expected to become operational in 2031–32.
