Air India has launched EasyRoam, an airline-branded travel SIM that allows passengers to access mobile data and voice services while travelling internationally. Developed in partnership with Tata Communications, the service aims to simplify connectivity for travellers by eliminating the need to arrange a local SIM after reaching their destination.
Initially available across 30 countries in North America, Europe, including the UK, Australia, Asia Pacific and the Middle East, EasyRoam offers roaming plans starting at Rs 241, excluding taxes. Prices vary based on the destination and selected plan.
Customers can retain their existing number for up to 1 year for a nominal fee. During the initial launch phase, the EasyRoam SIM is available free of cost, although roaming packs must be purchased separately. Customers buying a data plan will also receive up to 1GB of additional complimentary data, except when travelling to the Maldives and Mauritius.
Tata Communications provides the connectivity infrastructure for the service and has partnerships with more than 600 mobile network operators worldwide. This network enables EasyRoam to offer connectivity across international destinations.
The service is currently available through the Air India website and will subsequently be offered through the airline’s mobile app. Air India plans to gradually expand coverage to up to 190 countries. Travellers can choose between destination-specific and worldwide plans, with options for data-only or voice-and-data connectivity.
EasyRoam is available as both a physical SIM and an eSIM through a dedicated Air India-branded webpage. Travellers can purchase and activate their plans before departure, allowing them to connect after arriving at their destination.
“Today’s travellers expect their travel experience to be seamless, instant and secure. Through our collaboration with Air India, we’re bringing travel connectivity into the booking journey itself, enabling customers to choose and activate their mobile plan before departure and go online the moment they arrive,” said Vivek Manglik, Executive Vice President, Interaction Fabric, Tata Communications.
Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer at Air India, said international travellers increasingly expect uninterrupted access to digital services while crossing borders.
“EasyRoam addresses this need by enabling our customers to stay connected effortlessly while travelling internationally, without the hassle of arranging for connectivity after arrival,” Aggarwal said.
International travellers generally have 3 connectivity options: activating an international roaming pack with their existing operator, purchasing a local SIM after arrival, or buying a travel SIM or eSIM before departure.
While international roaming offers convenience, costs can vary significantly depending on the destination and plan. Buying a local SIM requires finding a retailer, completing registration requirements and changing SIM cards after arrival. Travel eSIMs have simplified connectivity for compatible smartphones, particularly for data-only needs.
With EasyRoam, Air India is bringing travel connectivity into its own ecosystem, allowing passengers to select and purchase a physical SIM or eSIM before departure and choose a destination-specific or worldwide plan.
