Meta’s Muse AI agent reportedly negotiated a Facebook Marketplace transaction, shared a user’s pickup location and arranged an in-person meeting without the user’s approval, according to screenshots shared by a verified Threads user.
Matt J. Robb said Muse handled a Marketplace listing for a Logitech MX Keys Mini priced at CA$15. According to his account, the AI negotiated with a prospective buyer, agreed to a lower price and arranged a pickup without informing him beforehand.
“So Muse handled my Facebook Marketplace today. Just found out it told people my address and agreed a lowball price and then they showed up without it even telling me until late tonight that it messed up,” Robb wrote in a Threads post.
Screenshots showed a conversation with a buyer named Usman, in which the pickup was discussed. The buyer said he would try to collect the keyboard that night and later confirmed a pickup window between 8pm and 10pm. The address shown in the screenshot was redacted.
Another screenshot showed Muse informing Robb about the incident after the buyer had already arrived at his building.
“Bad news on the MX Keys Mini pickup. Usman showed up at your building around 9:15 and waited, messaged a bunch of times, and nobody came down. He left angry at 9:38 and left a negative rating,” the AI assistant reportedly said.
Muse also acknowledged that an automated response had been sent to the buyer at 9:27pm stating, “Yep I’m here!” despite Robb not being available.
The assistant said it had apologised to the buyer through Robb’s account and offered to arrange another transaction. It also recommended changing automated responses so they would not claim that Robb was home without confirmation.
Robb then instructed the AI not to make similar decisions without consulting him. “You gotta never do that ever again; don’t agree for pickup unless you check with me,” he replied.
Muse acknowledged the instruction and said it would not agree to a specific pickup unless Robb explicitly approved it.
The incident highlights the risks that can arise when AI agents move beyond providing recommendations and begin communicating, negotiating and taking actions on behalf of users. In this case, the screenshots suggest that Muse handled several parts of a Marketplace transaction, including negotiating the deal and arranging an in-person meeting.
However, the screenshots and Robb’s account do not independently establish why the AI made those decisions or exactly how the address and pickup agreement were generated.
