A Norwegian roboticist has pushed the boundaries of biomimetic engineering by creating an experimental, shape-shifting robot. Kåre Halvorsen, recognized online as Zenta, designed and built the innovative hexapod named MorpHex.
The hobbyist and DIY project, which began around 2010, stands out as an engineering marvel rather than a mass-produced commercial product. It famously won the 2012 innovation contest hosted by a bearing manufacturer.
The machine features a highly adaptable design that supports 2 distinct modes of movement. It can unfold its structure to walk and crawl using 6 articulated legs, resembling a crab or a spider. Alternatively, it can retract the outer sections of its polycarbonate shell inward. This transformation allows it to form a smooth ball and roll efficiently like an armadillo.
To achieve this fluid movement, the robot relies on advanced hardware and stabilization technology. The build incorporates approximately 25 servo motors, including specialized components from a prominent electronics brand. It is powered by a dedicated control board and features an inertial measurement unit that provides critical stability while rolling.
