Beijing may be preparing to permit some major Chinese companies, including ByteDance and Alibaba, to purchase Nvidia’s RTX PRO 5500 chips, according to a report citing 2 people familiar with the matter.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has reportedly asked companies, including ByteDance and Alibaba, to submit their plans for purchasing Nvidia’s RTX PRO 5500 chips. The ministry has also told some Chinese companies that the government intends to approve these purchases.
Some industry executives expect the RTX PRO 5500 chip to remain outside US export restrictions.
Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report.
An Nvidia spokesperson said: “US firms continue to be restricted by a combination of outdated US export controls, which cover gaming products released nearly a half a decade ago, and China’s own limits on US imports,” when asked about the report.
Alibaba and ByteDance did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Reuters was also unable to immediately reach the Chinese government for comment.
