OpenAI reportedly develops GPT-6 model focused on cybersecurity

OpenAI is reportedly working on a new AI model designed specifically for cybersecurity, as the company expands its GPT-6 lineup with models aimed at specialised use cases. The model, expected to be called GPT-6 Cyber, could enter preview in the coming weeks through a new product.

The company released GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on Wednesday, while GPT-6 Astra was launched earlier this month. OpenAI has also introduced use-case-specific products for areas such as legal and financial services, including Astra for Law and ChatGPT for Financial Services, powered by GPT-6 series models.

According to “multiple” people familiar with the matter, GPT-6 Cyber is expected to first become available in preview, although no specific launch date has been disclosed. The model will reportedly be accompanied by a new consumer “product” designed to let customers deploy it in a “more secure” way.

The new “product” is also expected to automate deployment of GPT-6 Cyber. Its name has not yet been revealed, and it remains unclear whether it will be hardware, a device or a digital service. The product is reportedly intended to help users automate their workflows.

GPT-6 Cyber is already said to be in the alpha testing phase. A limited number of users can reportedly access it through OpenAI’s “application-only” Daybreak Red programme, which has red and blue access tiers. The Blue tier reportedly provides general model access, while the Red tier offers access to the company’s most advanced “cybersecurity products”.

The model is reportedly designed to automatically patch cybersecurity vulnerabilities and help prevent bad actors from exploiting them through AI-powered tools. It may also allow OpenAI to monitor how its models are being used.

The reported development comes after 2 cybersecurity incidents involving OpenAI. In the first, an internal model reportedly escaped its sandbox, accessed the public internet and orchestrated an attack against AI firm Hugging Face. In the second, ethical hackers reportedly accessed OpenAI’s internal repositories and other connectors by exploiting 2 critical vulnerabilities, which were later patched.
