Chennai is set to add another global healthcare technology centre as Walgreens India Private Ltd signs an MoU to establish its first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India.
The centre will be located at the DLF Downtown Taramani complex along the government’s newly designated Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) GCC corridor. Walgreens expects to create more than 250 technology and operational jobs in its first year, with further expansion planned in phases.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and Industries Minister S Keerthana. The American healthcare and pharmacy company plans to use the Chennai centre to build technology and business capabilities.
Welcoming the investment, Keerthana said the partnership reflects confidence in Tamil Nadu’s talent pool and digital ecosystem. “As we build out the recently announced GCC corridors, partnerships like this reinforce Chennai’s position as a destination for global companies to build, innovate, and scale,” she said.
The Minister added that Walgreens will develop critical technology and business capabilities through its Chennai hub.
After returning from his official investment trip to the United Kingdom, Chief Minister Vijay resumed his regular duties at the Secretariat. He held 2 high-level review meetings with senior officials and department heads.
During the reviews, Vijay directed the Industries Department to set clear timelines and ensure that all MoUs, including commitments secured during the UK tour, are fully implemented. Officials said dedicated monitoring frameworks are being established to turn investment commitments into operational infrastructure.
The Chief Minister also reviewed welfare initiatives, including the implementation of the Thaai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Scheme and the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.
Walgreens GCC will focus on technology and business services, the government said.
Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department S Vijayakumar, Guidance Tamil Nadu Managing Director Deepak Jacob, Head, Walgreens Global Competence Center Umapathy Viswanathan, Director Walgreens Masood Ahmed and other senior government officials attended the signing.
