A rise in cybercrime cases among Filipino families has prompted the Philippine National Police (PNP) to urge the public to report scams and other illegal online activities, warning that unreported incidents could encourage cybercriminals to target more victims.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. issued the appeal following the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey. Conducted from June 20 to 29 among 1,200 adults nationwide, the survey found that cybercrime victimisation among Filipino families increased to 8% in June from 5.8% in March.
The increase was recorded in Metro Manila, the Visayas and Mindanao, while Balance Luzon reported a slight decline.
Nartatez said the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) and regional police units are strengthening efforts to prevent and investigate online scams, account hacking, cyber fraud and other emerging threats affecting communities.
“Our ACG and concerned regional units have been intensifying cybercrime prevention, investigation, and public awareness efforts, particularly against online scams, account hacking, and other schemes targeting our communities,” Nartatez said.
The survey also showed a decline in traditional crime. Common-crime victimisation nationwide fell to 10% in June from 12.3% in March. Street robbery, break-ins, carnapping and physical violence all recorded declines.
The police chief said stronger coordination with partner agencies and faster action on complaints have been ordered as authorities work to prevent cybercrime from expanding further.
“We must strengthen coordination with our partners and ensure that complaints are acted upon promptly. The public can be assured that the PNP remains committed to protecting them not only in the physical environment but also in cyberspace,” Nartatez said.
“We urge everyone to remain vigilant, verify online transactions, protect their personal information, and immediately report suspicious activities. We will continue to pursue cybercriminals and hold them accountable,” he added.
