Windows users can now access Google’s AI assistant directly from their desktop without keeping a browser tab open. Google has launched a dedicated Gemini app for Windows, designed to work alongside other applications and support tasks involving documents, presentations and more.

One of the key features is a system-wide keyboard shortcut. Pressing Alt + Space opens Gemini over the active application. Users can ask questions, fact-check information in a document or generate ideas without leaving their current workflow.

Google says the shortcut works at any point while using a Windows PC. Once the task is complete, users can return to the application they were using and continue their work.

The app also includes a dedicated workspace for more complex tasks. It provides access to Gemini’s existing capabilities, including Gemini Spark, a personal AI agent designed to handle multi-step tasks and introduced earlier this year.

Users can also connect Gemini with Google services such as Gmail and Google Drive. The assistant can use relevant information from these services while completing tasks. For example, users can ask Gemini to create a project summary using information stored across their Google apps.

The Windows app also brings Google’s image and video generation tools to the desktop. Nano Banana can be used for image generation, while video generation is powered by Gemini Omni.

Google says the app is designed to be lightweight and run quietly in the background without slowing down the PC. The company also plans to add more native desktop capabilities through future updates.

The Gemini app for Windows is available globally from Thursday and supports PCs running Windows 10 and Windows 11.
