A bipartisan proposal aimed at protecting households from rising electricity costs linked to data center growth is set to reach the US House floor next week.
Republican lawmakers plan to bring the Ratepayer Protection Act for a vote before the midterm elections, according to a spokesperson for Speaker Mike Johnson.
“The bill will be on the floor of the House next week,” Taylor Haulsee, a spokesperson for Johnson, said in an email.
The planned vote was first reported by a news outlet.
The legislation comes as data centers expand their electricity demand across the country. Government officials nationwide are facing growing pressure to ensure that the higher costs of powering these facilities are not passed on to average households through increased electricity bills.
