Syneos Health appoints Madhuri Raya to lead Global AI & Engineering

The appointment comes as Syneos Health expands its AI capabilities across clinical development, patient safety and commercialisation, with its Hyderabad AI Hub emerging as a key technology centre.

Syneos Health has appointed Madhuri Raya as Global Head, AI & Engineering and Technology Capability Center, strengthening its technology leadership as the biopharmaceutical solutions company accelerates the use of artificial intelligence across its operations.

She brings more than two decades of experience spanning software engineering, cloud-native technologies, AI and machine learning, and large-scale technology leadership. She joins Syneos Health after serving as Vice President, Software Engineering at Optum, where she held leadership roles across engineering and technology.

Her earlier experience includes leadership positions at UnitedHealth Group and the Robert Bosch Research and Technology Center, giving her a background that cuts across enterprise technology, engineering and applied innovation.

Ms Raya’s appointment comes at a significant point in Syneos Health’s technology strategy. The company has been expanding its AI ecosystem across clinical development and commercialisation, moving beyond experimentation towards AI embedded in operational workflows.

Syneos Health says its AI capabilities now span areas including protocol optimisation, patient recruitment, study oversight, predictive analytics, customer engagement and market access. The company reports that its AI ecosystem includes more than 280 agents supporting workflows across clinical development and commercial operations.

The company has also been expanding strategic AI partnerships to strengthen commercial precision and apply AI to real-world biopharmaceutical workflows. Against this backdrop, her remit places engineering and AI capability-building at the centre of Syneos Health’s next phase of technology development. The appointment also comes as Syneos Health builds out its Hyderabad AI Hub, which the company describes as a strategic centre for AI-powered clinical development, patient safety and life-sciences innovation.

The hub combines biopharmaceutical expertise with engineering, data and AI capabilities to develop production-ready solutions for highly regulated environments. Its work includes AI-driven protocol design, predictive site selection, intelligent assistants, NLP and LLM applications for pharmacovigilance, and generative AI systems for scientific and commercial workflows.

The company is also hiring across areas such as GenAI engineering, MLOps, data engineering, data science, AI product management, responsible AI and enterprise architecture in Hyderabad, underscoring the growing role of engineering talent in its AI strategy.

For Syneos Health, the larger shift is from deploying isolated AI tools to building an integrated technology capability around them. The company says its approach is centred on embedding AI into everyday workflows while keeping humans accountable for decisions, particularly in regulated healthcare and life-sciences environments. That makes the engineering layer increasingly important. As AI moves into clinical, safety and commercial processes, organisations need not only models and applications but also scalable infrastructure, data foundations, governance and domain-specific engineering expertise. Raya’s appointment therefore signals a broader focus on building the technology capabilities required to take AI from individual use cases to enterprise-scale deployment.

With Syneos Health continuing to invest in its AI ecosystem and its Hyderabad technology hub, Raya’s new mandate will position engineering as a critical component of the company’s strategy to bring AI-powered solutions into the life-sciences value chain.
