Broadcom weighs up to $100 billion funding package for AI expansion

Broadcom is reportedly in talks with a group of lenders to raise more than $60 billion in debt for an AI chip financing deal that could support Anthropic and other companies.

The proposed financing could include about $30 billion in junior debt. Broadcom would also guarantee part of a senior-secured tranche estimated at $60 billion to $70 billion. Together, the structure could take the total fundraising to as much as $100 billion.

Broadcom plays a key role in designing custom chips for companies such as Alphabet and Meta as technology firms work to reduce their dependence on Nvidia. The company also has chip supply agreements with Anthropic and OpenAI.

Blackstone and Apollo Global Management are reportedly in discussions with Broadcom about participating in the financing. Blackstone declined to comment, while Broadcom and Apollo did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Deal follows $35 billion Anthropic partnership

The proposed financing follows a partnership announced in June between Broadcom, Apollo and Blackstone to fund a $35 billion expansion of Anthropic’s computing capacity using Broadcom’s custom chips and networking technology.

The initial commitment was expected to add 1 gigawatt of computing capacity. The broader partnership aims to provide more than 20 gigawatts of computing power for leading AI labs by 2028.

The new debt could be issued through a special-purpose vehicle and may follow a structure similar to the earlier $35 billion agreement.

Technology companies are increasingly turning to debt markets to finance their growing AI infrastructure costs. Major hyperscalers, including Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft, have indicated that AI spending is expected to remain elevated through 2026.
