WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new AI-powered image editing feature that could make it easier to fit photos into the platform’s full-screen 9:16 format. The feature may use Meta AI to generate additional content around the edges of an image, allowing users to expand it without manually cropping the original photo.

AI-powered photo expansion in testing

The feature was reportedly spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.33.2. It could appear directly inside the drawing editor, alongside tools such as animate and background options.

Users may need to open an image in the drawing editor and scroll through the filters section to find the new expansion tool. Once selected, Meta AI could analyse the photo and create additional content around its edges to fit the 9:16 format. Users may also be able to apply the tool again if they are not satisfied with the result.

The feature is reportedly being developed for both chats and Status updates. However, both versions may not launch at the same time. Status updates could receive the feature first, followed by support for chats in a later update.

Since 9:16 is the standard full-screen format, the tool could make it easier for users to adapt photos for WhatsApp without losing important parts of the original image. The feature is expected to reach beta testers through a future update.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp is reportedly testing several other features. These include chat themes with animated wallpapers on iOS. The platform has also recently updated its poll feature and introduced the @all mention option.
