A new teen-focused ChatGPT experience is now rolling out globally, bringing additional learning tools, stronger safety measures and optional parental controls for users under 18. The rollout began on August 18 for eligible teen accounts on Free and paid personal plans and will expand over the coming weeks.
Study tools and screen-time controls
OpenAI will use age-detection systems to identify accounts belonging to users under 18. Teens aged 13 to 17 can also enter their age to access the experience.
The new learning features include Study Mode, which guides students through problems using questions, hints and step-by-step support. ChatGPT may also suggest Study Mode for homework-related requests. Quizzes and other tools are available to help teenagers practise and test their understanding.
Study Hours can make Study Mode the default during selected periods. Teens can set these hours, while linked parents or guardians can also manage them. Quiet Hours can restrict access to ChatGPT at specific times.
Stronger safeguards for teen users
The teen experience adds stricter protections around self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities and sexually explicit or graphic content. ChatGPT may also encourage breaks during longer sessions and remind users that it is an AI tool. Before certain image uploads, teens may be asked to check for sensitive information.
Parents and guardians can connect their accounts through Parental Controls to manage selected settings, including Study Hours and Quiet Hours. However, they cannot read or monitor their teen’s conversations. In limited high-risk situations, OpenAI may send a safety notification to a linked parent containing only information considered necessary to support the teen.
The experience is rolling out globally, with full availability in Australia expected on September 8. Some features may differ by region. Teens can also use ChatGPT for creative projects, learning and everyday questions beyond schoolwork.
When ChatGPT determines that an account holder is 18 or older, the account may leave the teen experience. This can remove additional protections and disconnect parental controls. Users incorrectly placed in the teen experience can verify their age to request removal of the protections. Some settings, including parental controls and reduced sensitive-content options, can be enabled again later.
