Google adds tap-to-share functionality to Pixel and Android phones

Google has introduced a new way to make file and contact sharing easier between compatible Android devices. The new Tap to Send feature allows users to bring 2 Pixel phones close together to quickly exchange contact information, photos, videos and other media through Quick Share.

Google rolls out Tap to Send for Pixel devices

The feature was introduced alongside the Google Pixel 11 series, which launched in India and other global markets on August 12 at the Made by Google event. Google also unveiled a new smartwatch, its first Bluetooth tracker and several features for both new and existing Android devices.

Tap to Send is now rolling out to Pixel 6 and newer smartphones, including the Pixel 11 lineup. Users can bring 2 eligible Pixel phones close together or tap them to start sharing.

The feature uses Quick Share infrastructure along with NFC. Users can also exchange contact information in 2 directions when both phones are on the home screen.

For photos and videos, users can open the Share Sheet, bring the 2 compatible Pixel phones together and begin the transfer automatically.

The experience is similar to Apple’s AirDrop, which enables wireless sharing of photos and videos between compatible devices.

Google has also confirmed that Tap to Send will expand beyond Pixel phones. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8 are set to receive the feature, while other Android devices will get the update later this year.
