India is gaining greater influence in the global artificial intelligence landscape through public investment, shared computing infrastructure and a governance approach focused on balancing innovation with democratic safeguards.
The India AI Mission, backed by Rs 10,372 crore, is supporting the country’s transition from a software services hub to a global AI player focused on innovation, inclusion, affordability and democratic values. The mission aims to expand computing capacity, support research and startups, and build AI skills. It is also developing shared computing infrastructure with more than 38,000 GPUs to prevent AI resources from becoming concentrated among a small number of corporations.
“Artificial Intelligence is transforming economies, governance and global influence, and India is emerging as one of its most influential players,” a report said.
India’s large talent pool and fast enterprise adoption are also strengthening its AI position. The country ranked 3rd in Stanford University’s 2025 Global AI Vibrancy Ranking, behind the United States and China.
The report said 87% of Indian enterprises have adopted AI solutions, while the country’s AI market is projected to reach $131.31 billion by 2032. This is positioning India as an important driver of global AI growth.
“During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagements in France and the G7 Summit, AI featured prominently in discussions on innovation, digital infrastructure, research and responsible technology,” the report said.
Bharat Innovates 2026 also expanded India’s international presence by highlighting capabilities across AI, fintech, healthcare, space and deep technology.
India’s approach to AI governance was also highlighted for avoiding overly restrictive regulations. The government follows a “balanced framework that promotes innovation while addressing concerns over privacy, bias, misinformation, cybersecurity and digital sovereignty.”
The country’s Digital Public Infrastructure, including Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker and BHASHINI, provides a strong base for AI-powered public services. These platforms are also being recognised as global examples of scalable and affordable digital governance.
