Snapchat has joined YouTube, LinkedIn, and Substack in taking stronger action against low-quality content created entirely by artificial intelligence.
The move reflects a growing industry effort to reduce the spread of what is commonly referred to as “AI slop” as generative AI tools become more widely used.
Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, announced that it will stop recommending wholly AI-generated videos in its Spotlight feed and instead prioritize authentic, human-created content. However, content that has been enhanced or edited using AI will continue to be eligible for recommendations, as the platform continues to support responsible use of its own AI tools.
The company said fully AI-generated videos are often low-quality, repetitive, and do not match what Snapchat users want to see. Research also suggests that the more AI-generated content people encounter online, the less likely they are to trust the authenticity of other content on social media.
Other major platforms have introduced similar measures. Substack recently launched a tool to help readers identify AI-generated writing, citing research that estimates up to 40% of social media writing is now fake or AI-generated.
LinkedIn has introduced a feature allowing users to report posts and comments they believe were created entirely by AI. The platform also revealed it has blocked billions of attempts to publish AI-generated comments and now stops hundreds of thousands of automated comment attempts every day. While LinkedIn continues to support AI-assisted writing, it has removed its AI-powered post enhancement prompt and reverted to a basic proofreading tool.
YouTube has also updated its monetization policies by restricting earnings from videos classified as generic, repetitive, or template-based. The platform said these types of videos are increasingly produced using generative AI and do not align with its goal of promoting authentic, high-quality content.
As AI-generated content continues to grow across digital platforms, companies are increasingly balancing AI innovation with efforts to preserve authenticity, improve content quality, and maintain user trust.
