India is moving closer to integrating locally made semiconductor technology into its private space programme, with Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw saying that Indian chips will soon power domestic space rockets.
The announcement came after Vaishnaw met the leadership of private space technology company Skyroot Aerospace, following the successful orbital launch of its Vikram-1 rocket. Sharing his optimism about greater domestic technology integration, Vaishnaw wrote on X: “’Made in Bharat’ chips for our rockets… soon!”
The move comes as India’s private space sector reaches key operational milestones. On July 18, Skyroot Aerospace launched the Vikram-1 Test Flight-1, successfully placing its payloads into a 450-kilometre orbit. The mission was the first flight of an Indian privately developed orbital-class rocket and made India the 3rd country globally with private orbital launch capabilities.
Skyroot Aerospace also reaffirmed its plans to use Indian-made hardware in its launch vehicles. “Honoured to meet Hon’ble Union Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw. The development follows a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Skyroot Aerospace co-founders Pawan Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka. Modi praised their work and highlighted the success of Vikram-1.
“A great interaction with Pawan Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka of Skyroot Aerospace. Their energy, ambition and positivity reflect the vibrant spirit of our private space ecosystem. Best wishes to the entire Skyroot team,” Modi wrote.
