Bridgewater flags AI regulation as a growing risk for investors

As governments take a more active role in overseeing artificial intelligence, investors may face greater uncertainty around the technology’s growth and spending cycle, according to Bridgewater’s co-chief investment officers.

In a note to clients on Monday, Bob Prince, Greg Jensen and Karen Karniol-Tambour said greater government involvement could slow AI adoption and technological progress. They acknowledged that regulation has an important role in limiting harmful outcomes, but warned that tighter oversight could affect the AI capital expenditure cycle by lowering returns or increasing uncertainty for investors making long-term decisions.

The comments come as Washington has increased scrutiny of new AI model releases amid concerns over potential national security risks. The Trump administration is taking a more active role in monitoring AI capabilities and is also setting up an AI and cybersecurity coordination group. The group will share information about cybersecurity vulnerabilities identified by advanced AI systems and coordinate responses.

Bridgewater said higher interest rates or a decline in equity markets are unlikely to weaken companies’ willingness to invest in AI. However, the growing concentration of investment in the technology carries other risks, including disappointment over scientific progress and the possibility of tighter government regulation.

“The expansion relies on the willingness to finance the AI build-out, which now requires substantial capital,” the co-CIOs said.

Bridgewater, founded by billionaire investor Ray Dalio, is widely regarded as one of the world’s most successful hedge funds.
