Amid the sharp rise in cybercrime cases across India, Manipur has recorded one of the country’s lowest numbers of registered cybercrime incidents in 2024. However, experts have cautioned that the low figures should not lead to complacency, stressing the importance of stronger public awareness, timely reporting, and improved investigation mechanisms.
According to the latest Crime in India 2024 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Manipur reported just 5 cybercrime cases in 2024. The state has witnessed a steady decline over the past 5 years, with cases dropping from 79 in 2020 to 67 in 2021, 18 in 2022, 3 in 2023, and 5 in 2024.
Among the 8 northeastern states, Assam recorded the highest number of cybercrime with 408, followed by Meghalaya (97), Arunachal Pradesh (78), Mizoram (50), Tripura (33), Sikkim (15), Nagaland (14), and Manipur (5).
At the national level, cybercrime increased significantly from 86,420 in 2023 to 1,01,928 in 2024. Telangana reported the highest number of cases at 27,230, followed by Karnataka (21,993), Uttar Pradesh (11,073), and Maharashtra (9,922). Online fraud remained the largest category of cybercrime with 29,758 cases, followed by cheating (19,296) and computer-related offences (36,920).
The Ministry of Home Affairs said that while cybercrime prevention and investigation are primarily the responsibility of state governments, the Centre continues to strengthen enforcement through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the 1930 cyber fraud helpline, cyber forensic facilities, and capacity-building initiatives. As of June 30, 2026, authorities said financial frauds worth more than Rs. 11,158 crore had been prevented through the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System.
Experts noted that while Manipur’s cybercrime numbers remain significantly lower than both the regional and national averages, lower case registration may not necessarily indicate lower cybercrime activity. They emphasised the need for greater public awareness, prompt reporting, and stronger cybercrime enforcement.
