OpenAI has officially launched its GPT-5.6 model for public use after receiving approval from the U.S. government, ending a limited preview that was previously available only to government-approved organisations. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described GPT-5.6 as “the best model we have ever produced.”
Alongside the new model, OpenAI also introduced ChatGPT Work, a new AI agent designed to combine the capabilities of ChatGPT and Codex for everyday users. The platform allows even non-technical users to benefit from advanced AI features beyond coding tasks.
Powered by the GPT-5.6 model family, including Sol, Terra, and Luna, ChatGPT Work can gather context from selected apps, files, and workflows to create completed documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and web applications. It also includes a unified plugins directory that connects with tools such as Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, calendars, and CRM platforms.
OpenAI confirmed that ChatGPT Work and GPT-5.6 are immediately available through the ChatGPT desktop application for Mac and Windows users worldwide, including free ChatGPT users. On mobile and the web, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users will receive access first, while Plus and Business users are expected to gain access over the next few days. The company said the global rollout has already begun and will continue over the next 24 hours.
The launch comes as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Apple continue competing to develop AI agents that deliver practical value for everyday users. The growing competition has intensified following the popularity of the open-source AI agent OpenClaw.
ChatGPT Work is positioned as OpenAI’s direct competitor to Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, combining productivity features with advanced AI capabilities. The company is also highlighting Sol, the most powerful model in the GPT-5.6 family, as setting “a new standard for intelligence and efficiency,” particularly in coding, cybersecurity, science, and computer-use tasks.
OpenAI is also positioning GPT-5.6 as a more cost-effective alternative to competing flagship AI models, addressing growing concerns over rising AI development costs and pricing for customers.
