Dr Jagannath Nayak, Distinguished Scientist and Director of CHESS, has been appointed as Director General (Missiles & Strategic Systems) at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), effective July 1.
The appointment marks another significant milestone in his distinguished career spanning more than 35 years in defence research and development.
Dr Nayak is widely recognised for his contributions to the indigenous design and development of advanced avionics for defence and aerospace applications. As Director of CHESS, he led the development, field testing and Transfer of Technology (ToT) of India’s 1st Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) system, representing a major advancement in the country’s next-generation defence capabilities.
He earned his MS and PhD in Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Throughout his career, Dr Nayak has played a key role in strengthening India’s indigenous defence technologies.
He is the chief architect behind the Fibre Optic Gyro (FOG) guidance system for Akash missiles and DEW-based anti-drone systems. As Project Director at the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, he also led the indigenous development of Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOG), contributing significantly to India’s missile guidance and navigation technologies.
In addition to his research and leadership contributions, Dr Nayak has published more than 125 research papers in reputed journals and conference proceedings and has authored several books.
