Following discussions with US authorities, Anthropic has received approval to restore global access to its Fable 5 AI model after the US government lifted export restrictions imposed earlier this month. The decision clears the way for the company to resume wider distribution of the model beginning Wednesday.
The US Commerce Department had issued a private export control directive on June 12, requiring Anthropic to obtain government approval before allowing foreign nationals to access its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models. In response, the company temporarily disabled access while working with officials to address security concerns.
Anthropic confirmed the decision in a post on X, stating that restrictions on both models had been lifted. The company thanked users for their patience and acknowledged those who helped restore access.
The reversal follows discussions between Anthropic executives, including co-founder Tom Brown, and senior US officials. According to a letter from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Anthropic committed to proactively addressing security risks associated with its AI models and agreed to work with the government on future AI safety protocols and standards.
The government’s concerns centred on preventing malicious users from bypassing the models’ built-in safety guardrails. Anthropic said Fable 5, the public version of its Mythos-class model, includes safeguards that block responses to certain cybersecurity and biology-related queries. In such cases, requests are redirected to the company’s Opus 4.8 model.
The earlier export directive marked one of the most significant US government interventions in an AI company’s operations and raised broader questions about regulating AI model access through export controls. The move also influenced the wider AI industry, with OpenAI limiting the rollout of its GPT-5.6 model after similar government discussions.
Anthropic, valued at $965 billion following its latest funding round, confidentially filed for an initial public offering on June 1 and is reportedly considering a public listing as early as October. Despite the easing of export restrictions, the company continues its legal dispute with the US Department of Defense over an earlier supply-chain designation.
