VinFast is strengthening its presence in India’s electric vehicle (EV) market by expanding local manufacturing, dealership operations and customer ownership programmes.
The Vietnamese automaker said its strategy goes beyond launching EVs and focuses on building a complete ownership ecosystem as India’s shift towards electric mobility gains momentum.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), electric car sales in India increased 75% year-on-year in 2025 to 165,000 units, accounting for nearly 4% of total passenger vehicle sales. EV penetration across the overall automobile market crossed 11% in May, while 16 electrified passenger vehicle models are expected to launch over the next 9 months, compared with 7 internal combustion engine models. The number of electric passenger vehicle models has also doubled to around 20 over the past 2 financial years and is expected to exceed 35 by the next financial year, particularly in the sub-₹15 lakh segment.
The company said improving operating economics is also supporting EV adoption. According to Crisil Ratings, running costs for internal combustion engine vehicles increased by 7%–8% in May following fuel price revisions, increasing the ownership cost advantage of EVs by around 3 percentage points. Battery technology has also improved, with premium EVs offering driving ranges of 500 km–700 km and mainstream models delivering 300 km–450 km on a single charge. Battery warranties have also been extended to 8–10 years.
Crisil further estimates that more than 40% of the automotive industry’s planned ₹60,000 crore capital expenditure over the current and next financial years will be invested in EV expansion, localisation and manufacturing capacity.
To support its long-term growth, VinFast has established a manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu to build vehicles for the Indian market and plans to introduce a new model approximately every 6 months across additional vehicle segments. The company also plans to expand its retail footprint from 50 showrooms, opened by March 2026, to 75 dealerships across more than 60 cities by the end of the year.
To strengthen the ownership experience, VinFast offers free public charging until March 2029, buyback programmes and warranty coverage of up to 10 years. The company also launched Green SM Limo in New Delhi earlier this year, operating exclusively with VinFast electric vehicles to increase consumer familiarity through commercial fleet services.
