Oracle workforce falls to 141,000 as AI-driven changes and restructuring accelerate

Oracle has reduced its global workforce by 21,000 employees over the past 12 months, with the company stating that the adoption of artificial intelligence has contributed to the elimination of certain roles.

According to its annual financial regulatory filing, Oracle’s total full-time employee count declined to 141,000 as of May 31, down from 162,000 a year earlier. The workforce reductions resulted in approximately $1.8 billion in restructuring costs.

In the filing, the company noted that “The adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce.”

The job cuts come as Oracle continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure, including large-scale data centre expansion to support customers such as OpenAI. The company has been facing financial pressure from these investments and has undertaken workforce restructuring measures aimed at controlling costs. While reports earlier this year indicated that Oracle had begun reducing thousands of jobs, the full extent of the workforce reduction had not been publicly disclosed until now.

As of the end of May, Oracle employed approximately 49,000 people in the US and 92,000 employees across international markets.

The company’s current headcount is also slightly below its pre-2022 workforce levels before the acquisition of Cerner. The $28 billion deal added thousands of employees, many of whom were based around Cerner’s headquarters in the Kansas City region.
