As artificial intelligence applications become more advanced, telecom operators are being forced to rethink how future mobile networks are designed. Industry experts say the rapid growth of AI services could significantly increase upload traffic, creating fresh challenges for 5G and upcoming 6G networks.
Today, video streaming accounts for nearly 70-75% of overall mobile traffic, making networks largely download-focused. However, emerging AI applications, smart glasses, autonomous vehicles and multimodal systems are expected to change that pattern by continuously uploading images, videos and sensor data for real-time processing.
According to industry studies, this shift could place greater pressure on uplink capacity, requiring operators to redesign network architectures. Experts believe future networks must become more flexible and support changing upload-to-download traffic ratios without requiring major infrastructure overhauls.
Edge computing is also expected to play a bigger role. Processing AI workloads closer to users can reduce latency and improve performance, as relying only on centralised cloud infrastructure may create bottlenecks.
Industry leaders said AI is creating both opportunities and challenges for telecom operators. Networks are expected to evolve beyond providing connectivity and become platforms capable of supporting AI agents and third-party software systems.
Another major focus is interoperability. Experts believe standardisation will be essential to ensure different vendors, software platforms and AI systems can work together seamlessly.
Security and trust frameworks are also becoming increasingly important. Operators are being urged to build stronger mechanisms to protect sensitive data, detect malicious activity and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
As 6G standardisation gains momentum, telecom companies are focusing on building sustainable and AI-ready networks. Industry experts believe early planning will help operators manage rising traffic demands while supporting future AI-driven services.
