Bengaluru elderly man loses ₹7.44 lakh in SIM-swap cyber fraud case

A case of alleged SIM-swap fraud in Bengaluru has resulted in a senior citizen losing ₹7.44 lakh, highlighting the continued rise of telecom-based cyber scams targeting unsuspecting users.

The victim, an elderly man, reportedly fell prey to fraudsters who are believed to have taken control of his mobile number through a SIM-swap technique. Once access to the number was gained, the attackers allegedly used it to carry out unauthorised financial transactions, leading to the loss of ₹7.44 lakh.

SIM-swap fraud typically involves criminals tricking telecom operators into issuing a duplicate SIM card linked to a victim’s mobile number. Once activated, the original SIM stops working, allowing fraudsters to intercept OTPs and gain access to banking and financial accounts linked to the number.

In this case, the fraud came to light after the victim noticed suspicious activity and financial irregularities linked to his account. By the time the issue was identified, the money had already been withdrawn.

Cybercrime incidents involving SIM-swap techniques have been increasing, with fraudsters exploiting gaps in mobile verification systems and digital banking security layers. Senior citizens are often considered more vulnerable due to limited awareness of evolving digital fraud methods.

Authorities have been investigating the incident, while also urging citizens to remain cautious about unsolicited calls, messages, and requests for personal or banking information. Users are advised to enable additional security features offered by banks and telecom providers, including SIM protection locks and transaction alerts.

The case adds to a growing number of cyber fraud incidents reported in urban centres, where digital payment systems and mobile banking usage continue to rise rapidly. Experts say awareness and preventive measures remain critical to reducing such crimes.
