Kimi Work brings AI agent automation directly to users’ desktops

A new shift in AI-powered productivity is taking shape as Moonshot AI has launched Kimi Work, a desktop-based AI agent designed to operate directly on a user’s computer. The company has released the application for both macOS and Windows, enabling users to access local files, interact with live browser sessions, and automate scheduled tasks.

Unlike most AI agents that rely on cloud-based environments, Kimi Work runs locally on a user’s machine. This approach allows the agent to work with files and active sessions already stored on the device. Users can assign tasks using natural language, and the application executes them directly on the desktop. Community reports indicate that Kimi Work is powered by Kimi K2.6, Moonshot AI’s flagship model.

Released on April 20, 2026, Kimi K2.6 is an open-weight Mixture-of-Experts model that activates approximately 32 billion parameters per token and supports a 256K-token context window for handling complex, multi-step workflows.

Kimi Work is built around 4 core components. The first is an Agent Swarm system that can reportedly scale to 300 sub-agents running in parallel. The platform divides large tasks into smaller parts and combines the results, while K2.6 supports up to 4,000 coordinated steps.

The second component, WebBridge, is a browser extension that allows the AI agent to search, scroll, extract information, and complete forms using a user’s existing browser sessions, logins, and cookies.

The third feature is a built-in cron scheduling engine that supports daily, hourly, and conditional workflows. It can trigger AI tasks as well as Python and shell scripts. A “Keep Computer Awake” option helps prevent overnight jobs from stopping.

The fourth component enables access to local files and background Python execution. Files remain unchanged unless the user approves modifications.

Kimi Work also includes built-in financial market data covering A-shares, Hong Kong stocks, and US equities. Research outputs can be converted into PowerPoint presentations or Excel spreadsheets.

The platform supports several use cases, including document summarization, web-based data collection, automated morning briefings, and presentation creation. While local execution provides direct access to files and greater control, cloud-based agents continue to offer easier deployment and managed security. The scheduler uses a standard cron engine with 5 fields: minute, hour, day-of-month, month, and day-of-week.
