In a move aimed at simplifying digital authentication, Vi has partnered with Meta to launch Silent Mobile Verification (SMV) in India. The new network-based technology is designed to make user verification across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook faster, more secure, and seamless.
With SMV, Vi subscribers will be able to access Meta’s platforms by simply entering their mobile number. Instead of relying on passwords or One-Time Passwords (OTPs), the verification process will take place directly through Vi’s cellular network in the background.
The system works by allowing Meta’s applications to send a verification request to Vi’s network. Once the user’s identity is authenticated, access is granted without requiring additional login credentials. If verification cannot be completed, the platform will deny access.
According to Vi, the technology is expected to speed up several processes, including new user registrations, mobile number verification, account logins, re-logins, account recovery, and security-related authentication checks.
A key advantage of SMV is that users no longer need to switch between applications or wait for verification messages. Since authentication happens directly through the telecom network, the process becomes quicker and more convenient.
The telecom provider also highlighted the security benefits of the system. By removing the need to manually enter passwords or OTPs, SMV reduces exposure to phishing attacks and other digital identity threats. Verification credentials remain within the network, adding an extra layer of protection for users.
Vi said it plans to expand the use of Silent Mobile Verification beyond Meta’s platforms by bringing the technology to additional ecosystem partners in the future. The company also intends to leverage SMV for advanced authentication services, fraud prevention, and intelligent risk-based verification solutions.
The rollout marks another step toward password-less authentication, with a focus on improving both user experience and digital security.
