Authorities caution social media users against spreading false information

Amid growing concerns over the spread of misinformation online, the Cybercrime Unit of the Public Security Directorate has urged social media users to avoid sharing rumors and false information across digital platforms.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the unit called on the public to act responsibly when consuming and sharing online content. It stressed the importance of verifying information before forwarding it to others.

The unit stated: “Let it stop with you and do not help spread it. Be part of the solution… Verify before you share.”

Authorities also highlighted the legal consequences of creating or circulating false information. According to the statement, individuals found guilty of initiating or spreading rumors may face imprisonment for a period ranging from 3 months to 3 years.

In addition, offenders may be subject to fines between JD 5,000 and JD 20,000, or both penalties.

The warning forms part of ongoing efforts to encourage responsible social media use and limit the spread of misleading information online.
