New AI governance playbooks aim to strengthen transparency in healthcare systems

As artificial intelligence adoption accelerates across the healthcare sector, the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) has introduced a new set of governance playbooks designed to help healthcare organizations deploy AI safely, transparently and consistently.

The framework provides structured guidance and baseline governance controls across key operational areas while allowing organizations to adapt implementation based on their own systems and requirements.

According to CHAI, the playbooks are intended to support existing healthcare workflows instead of replacing them.

The governance framework focuses on 8 core areas, including organizational AI policy, organizational structure, organizational resources, responsible AI lifecycle management, risk and impact assessments, responsible data management and use, third-party management, and education, training and feedback.

CHAI said each playbook contains implementation guidance, practical tools, resources and real-world examples to help healthcare systems integrate responsible AI practices into day-to-day operations.

The organization revealed that the framework was developed in collaboration with more than 100 healthcare organizations through workshops and multiple feedback cycles.

CHAI CEO Brian Anderson said the healthcare industry has been seeking “practical, consistent, and comprehensive” guidance for deploying AI responsibly across medical systems.

“These efforts don’t just help to define responsible AI, they intend to make it usable for healthcare delivery organizations across the country—regardless of resource level and all to translate AI innovation into high-quality care for every patient,” Anderson said.

The playbooks build on earlier initiatives between CHAI and the Joint Commission, which had previously introduced principles for responsible AI use in healthcare environments.

The Joint Commission is also expected to launch a voluntary AI certification program, with the new governance framework likely to support organizations seeking certification.

Mercy Health Responsible AI Program Director Taylor Rhodes said the guidance helps healthcare organizations convert AI governance goals into measurable operational practices.

He added that the framework creates a common governance language while still allowing healthcare providers to customize oversight based on operational requirements and acceptable risk levels.

The launch reflects growing industry focus on building stronger governance, compliance and oversight frameworks as AI becomes more deeply integrated into healthcare systems worldwide.
