A Bengaluru-based tech professional was allegedly duped of Rs 1.66 crore in an online investment scam that reportedly began through a dating app conversation.

According to reports, the victim came in contact with a woman on a dating platform who later convinced him to invest in what was presented as a profitable online trading opportunity.

The fraudsters allegedly gained the victim’s trust over time through regular conversations before introducing him to an investment platform promising high returns.

Believing the scheme to be genuine, the tech professional reportedly transferred large amounts of money across multiple transactions. Initially, the platform showed fake profits and positive returns, encouraging further investments.

However, when the victim later attempted to withdraw the funds, the scammers allegedly demanded additional payments under the pretext of taxes, processing fees and account verification charges.

Police said the victim eventually realized he had been cheated after the fraudsters stopped responding and blocked communication channels.

A cybercrime complaint has been registered and authorities have launched an investigation into the case.

Officials warned that cybercriminals are increasingly using dating apps and social media platforms to target victims through emotional manipulation and fake investment schemes.

Investigators said such scams often involve fraudsters building online relationships to gain trust before introducing cryptocurrency trading, stock investments or other fake financial opportunities.

Cybercrime experts have advised users to remain cautious while interacting with unknown individuals online and avoid transferring money based on investment promises shared through social media or dating platforms.

Authorities also urged the public to verify investment platforms carefully and report suspicious online activity immediately to cybercrime agencies.

The incident highlights the growing rise of romance-linked cyber fraud cases targeting professionals and digitally active users across major cities.
