Google has introduced a new variant of its Gemini AI model, Gemini 3.5 Flash (Low), to help users of its coding platform Antigravity manage token usage more efficiently. The move comes after users reported hitting rate limits quickly following Google’s shift from a message-based system to a compute-based token usage model.
The new system measures how many tokens are consumed instead of counting messages. After the rollout, several users complained that even simple tasks were exhausting tokens too fast on Antigravity. Google had already increased the platform’s rate limits twice, taking them up to 9x of the original limit, but feedback from users continued.
Addressing the issue, Varun Mohan from Google DeepMind said, “We heard concerns that Antigravity consumes many tokens for simple tasks now. So, we’re adding Gemini 3.5 Flash (Low) as a way to optimise token usage for these tasks.”
According to the company, the newly launched Gemini 3.5 Flash (Low) generates nearly 45% fewer output tokens compared to the existing Gemini 3.5 Flash model, which has now been renamed Gemini 3.5 Flash (Medium). Google has also introduced Gemini 3.5 Flash (High), designed for more advanced and complex tasks.
Despite consuming fewer tokens, Google claims the Low variant delivers strong performance and even outperforms the High variant in software engineering tasks.
Alongside the update, Google has temporarily reset Gemini quotas across all subscription plans, including the free tier, allowing users to complete projects without quickly reaching their limits.
Users also raised concerns regarding image generation limits on Antigravity. One user pointed out that they could generate 1000 images on Codex but only 24 on Antigravity under the Ultra plan. Responding to the feedback, Mohan admitted, “That’s quite low, I agree. Makes sense to increase,” although no confirmation on revised limits was shared.
The latest changes highlight Google’s effort to improve user experience on Antigravity as demand for AI-powered coding tools continues to rise.
