Apple is reportedly preparing major upgrades for its AI-powered creative tools with the upcoming iOS 27 update. The improvements are expected to focus on Genmoji and Image Playground, giving users a better image generation experience powered by enhanced Apple Intelligence features.
According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has improved its in-house image generation models used for Genmoji and Image Playground. The report states that the visual quality of AI-generated images will receive a noticeable boost in iOS 27.
Genmoji, introduced with iOS 18.2, currently allows users to create custom emojis using text prompts. Reports suggest Apple may soon make the feature smarter by enabling AI-generated emoji suggestions based on users’ photo libraries and commonly used phrases. At present, users must manually enter prompts through the emoji keyboard to create Genmoji content.
Image Playground is also expected to receive major enhancements. Reports indicate Apple could expand support for third-party AI image-generation models in the feature. Currently, the platform supports ChatGPT for image creation, but future updates may include support for Google AI models as well. The report also hints that Apple could bring advanced on-device AI image editing capabilities through these integrations.
Apple is expected to officially preview iOS 27 during WWDC 2026, scheduled from June 8 to June 12. Alongside AI image-generation upgrades, the operating system is also rumoured to introduce a redesigned Siri, an upgraded Shortcuts app, AI-powered wallpaper generation, and enhanced Writing Tools features.
Although Apple has not officially confirmed these updates, AI is expected to remain one of the biggest highlights of this year’s developer conference.
