India’s student startup ecosystem is witnessing a major transformation, with young founders increasingly building ventures in AI, defence, climate technology, and quantum computing instead of traditional consumer internet and edtech businesses. A recent industry report by Campus Fund highlighted the growing rise of research-driven and deep-tech startups across the country.
The report analysed more than 7,300 startups in 2025 and found that deep-tech has become the largest category among student-led ventures, accounting for 16.87% of the startup funnel. In 2021, deep-tech was not even among the top 5 startup sectors tracked by the fund.
At the same time, edtech startups recorded a 36% decline compared to 2021 levels, while services-based startups fell by 52% as generative AI tools increasingly automate tutoring, content creation, and freelance work.
The report noted a significant rise in technical expertise among young founders. “Five years ago, a typical investment committee conversation was about whether a team could ship. Today, it is about whether they can defend,” the report stated.
India’s startup geography is also expanding beyond major metro cities. Earlier, nearly 60% of student startups came from Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. That figure has now dropped below 40%, with cities like Pilani, Vellore, Jaipur, and Bhubaneswar emerging as growing startup hubs.
Delhi overtook Bengaluru in startup volume for the first time, contributing 13.27% of startups compared to Bengaluru’s 12.99%. Karnataka remained the leading state with 15.29%, followed closely by Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
The report also highlighted a sharp rise in research-focused entrepreneurship. The number of PhD founders increased nearly 7 times, rising from 35 in 2020-21 to 237 in 2024-25.
Within deep-tech, nearly 79% of startups focused on AI technologies such as large language models, computer vision, and AI middleware. However, advanced sectors like quantum technology, photonics, and neuromorphic computing still account for less than 2% of the overall deep-tech startup ecosystem.
