BHIM records 301% transaction growth as everyday digital payments gain momentum

Growing consumer reliance on digital transactions helped the BHIM Payments App record significant growth during FY26, with transaction volumes rising by 301%, according to NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL).

The company reported that monthly transactions increased from 5.93 crore in April 2025 to 21.6 crore in March 2026. In April 2026 alone, the platform processed 22.49 crore transactions with a total value of ₹26,040 crore.

West Bengal emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets for the app. During FY26, peer-to-merchant (P2M) payments accounted for 71% of all transactions in the state. Grocery purchases contributed the largest share of merchant transactions at 22.5%, followed by food outlets and restaurants at 18.7%. Quick commerce represented 6.4% of transactions, while e-commerce and fuel stations accounted for 3.9% and 3.4%, respectively.

Commenting on the growth, Lalitha Nataraj said, “In West Bengal, we are seeing this adoption take shape across a wide range of everyday use cases, from groceries and dining to commuting and online purchases, highlighting how digital payments are becoming an integral part of daily life.”

NBSL also reported growing adoption of newer payment options, including RuPay Credit Card on UPI. To expand accessibility, the BHIM app supports more than 15 regional languages, including Bengali, and is optimized for low-connectivity environments to serve users in rural and semi-urban regions.

The platform has introduced several new features, including UPI Circle for delegated payments within predefined limits, Family Mode for managing shared expenses, split bill payments, spending analytics, UPI Lite auto top-up, prepaid mobile recharge, and forex booking services.

According to the company, reward-based incentives and merchant partnerships have also contributed to higher user engagement and broader adoption across different payment categories.
