Tesla is continuing its push into Europe as Lithuania becomes the 2nd European country to approve the use of its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) driver-assistance software. The move supports Tesla’s broader goal of establishing itself as a leader in AI and robotics, beyond its role as an electric vehicle manufacturer.
The European rollout began last month after Dutch regulator RDW approved the technology. Expanding FSD across the region is a key part of CEO Elon Musk’s long-term strategy and is also tied to performance targets linked to his $1 trillion compensation package, including reaching “10 million active FSD subscriptions” by 2035.
Tesla reported nearly 1.3 million paying FSD customers worldwide during its Q1 earnings call in April, highlighting the distance still to be covered before achieving that goal.
First introduced in beta in late 2020, FSD (Supervised) has received regular updates aimed at improving performance and reliability. The system can manage tasks such as steering, lane changes, and parking, but still requires active driver supervision. Tesla now offers the feature through a monthly subscription priced at $99.
Regulatory reviews have slowed the adoption of FSD in Europe compared with the United States. At present, the software is approved only in the Netherlands and Lithuania. However, wider expansion could follow if RDW secures broader acceptance across the European Union.
Several countries are already moving in that direction. Greece is expected to approve FSD through an upcoming transport bill, while Belgium is also anticipated to authorize the technology using a similar approval process.
Outside Europe, Tesla’s FSD is available in Australia, Canada, China, Mexico, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and the United States.
While Tesla continues to promote other AI and robotics initiatives, including its Optimus humanoid robot and FSD Unsupervised technology, neither is currently available to consumers at scale. FSD (Supervised) remains the company’s most widely accessible AI-powered product.
